Just Me and My Mom Thursday-Saturday was the ASHA (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association) conference in Chicago. I was lucky enough to attend with other SLP's from District 87. It was great to attend sessions from the leading researchers and practitioners in the field! In honor of ASHA 2013, Appy Mall compiled a list of free and reduced iPad applications. Many of these apps I use in speech (i.e. Fun with Directions, Splingo, Between the Lines, First Phrases, etc). You can arrange the list by price so you see the free applications first!
Free and Reduced Apps for ASHA 2013 I have Bamba Burger and Bamba Ice Cream shop on my iPad. First, these apps are free! Second, they are highly motivating for the students. Third, there are numerous speech and language concepts that can be targeted by just talking with your student while using the application. Many times, I have students take orders for each other or myself. This targets social skills, asking questions, and using complete sentences. Articulation can be targeted by having the students use good speech sounds when giving their order or taking another person's order. Turn taking can be practiced if numerous children are playing together and need to share turns. The possibilities are endless with this application and a creative mind!
Link to: Bamba Burger Link to: Bamba Ice Cream Play Home Lite is a free version of the Play Home application. This lite version allows the user to have access to 2 rooms in a house, a living room and kitchen. It is important to sit with your child while using this application to make it a true language experience. Receptive language skills, such as following directions, can be targeted by telling your child to "feed the girl an apple" or "turn on the television." Expressive language can be targeted in the areas of grammar (i.e. past tense- "What did the girl just do?" "She TURNED on the stereo" or "She ATE the apple."), categories (name items you see in a living room, kitchen, or other rooms in the house), asking/answering questions, articulation (practice your speech sounds in sentences and conversation while talking about what the people are doing in the scene), and much more! Below are links to the free and full versions! The full version costs $3.99
